Let's say it's a man who is verbally abusing the woman. He does this repeatedly till she feels she isn't worth anything. She feels that he is telling the truth and she is the one who is at fault for everything. He makes her feel that she is so lucky to have him, because no one else would want her. They both end up being very sick people.

She needs to get away from him, but they rarely do, unless he becomes physically abusive as well, and she ends up in a hospital from the injuries.

gwyneth

I was a victim of emotional and mental abuse. I would have given anything to be hit. Verbal abuse is very psychologically damaging. It stays with you forever.Children who are told they are no good even one time will have that thought for the rest of their lives. When someone hits, it happens, its over. Words do hurt and they hurt for a long long time and affect everything a person does.

Exactly,!! You have expressed a common situation and wonder how on earth these folks learned to accept abuse.

Lyle

Getting hit, that's easy to deal with, we all know how to hit back or run. Verbal abuse though, comes in so many different forms and sometimes it's hard to react or know what to do. So people get hurt. :[
